Many people are probably familiar with the basic version of poker whether it is stud poker or draw poker. However, given the popularity of this game it is not surprising to learn that it actually has evolved into some other forms of poker. One of these is community card poker games. Perhaps the most popular game within this class is Texas Hold’em Poker.

While some aspects of poker can be seen in Texas Hold’em such as the hand ranking, much of this game if markedly different. However, it can be easy for a beginner to learn. When the game begins, a round of wagering commences with initial blinds and antes. Every player that antes up is entitled to be dealt two cards. These are your blind cards meaning that no one can see them but you until the end of the hand when all is revealed.

Following the next round of betting is the flop. This is one of the pivotal aspects of Texas Hold’em as these will be the largest number of cards revealed at once. Betting again follows with the turn occurs. The turn is when the fourth card is revealed. Betting again occurs. Then the fifth and final card is shown which is called the river. Of course, during the betting rounds, players do have the option of folding their hand if they feel that have nothing of value.

When all betting has ended, then this is the time for the showdown. This is when the players remaining in the game show their hands. The players use both blind cards in their hand as well as any three of the community cards to their hand. The biggest thing to learn in this game is how the community cards work as well as when they will be revealed. Texas Hold’em poker can be found at many online casinos including poker.ladbrokes.com.

Two questions, why is there no write up on the Women’s and the Press event? (Because, all the writers were playing in the press event?) One website www.pokerpages.com has the winners but no written words. Can’t find anything on the other sites. Second question is a technical one: When I access poker pages through the server on AOL it shows only information up to event #22. When I use internet explorer is shows events #23 and #24….. why is this? (I access through an ISP so when I use explorer it is not linked in anyway to aol)

First of all the report for the ladies will be up later today. Secondly about your second point regarding AOL we have heard of similar experiences in the past. I really do not have an answer right now for you, but I will look into it. In the mean time I hope you like looking at PokerPages.com and playing http://www.777.com/play-blackjack.html, and you will see that ladies can also play other types of online casino games besides poker.

I use AOL and I’m showing results through event #24. The final results for event #22 appear after 23 and 24, check again and you should show the others.

It DOES show now…. At 8AM (EST) I found it on explorer…. Just now before posting I went through AOL to see if there were written words yet and poof not there…. WHAT…. so I immediately tried explorer again, and there is was. Clearly, less than one hour ago explorer could access events #23 #24 but AOL could not…. But thanks….. Perhaps, AOL protects from checking on friends, just like it protects some of us (not all of us – smile) from posts with Badger and bed in the same sentence.

Say you put in the last or only raise on a 4-handed flop of Qd 8d 7c holding the AX of diamonds on the button. The turn is an off-suit blank, but just as you planned it, your three opponents check to you now, and you check right behind them. You hear some grumbles, someone whispers to his neighbour, someone else says “ooh, sneaky play”, all the typical stupid things that happen when the button makes a free card play. A small diamond falls on the river to give you the nuts, and again they check to you. You bet, and since your play screams “I revered a flush!”, only one of your opponents pays you off–no one wants to call (but of course someone usually does), and certainly no one wants to overcall. In this circumstance, usually only the fishiest of players would overcall with anything weaker than say, top two pair. Well, I’m not happy with this. I want to eat my cake and eat it again, damnit. Is there anything I can do on the turn…a sort of fake tell that is simple enough for my opponents to fall for but not so subtle everyone misses completely? An example: Sometimes when I make a free card play and it’s checked to me I’ll look at the original bettor (i.e. the on-the-flop bettor that I raised) before checking the turn as if saying “hmmm, I don’t trust you. You might be trying to sandbag me. I think I’m just going to check and see what you do on the river,” and hope everyone else is paying attention to that too. That might suggest that I’m not drawing at a big hand, but rather that I have an okay hand but I’m afraid to bet it. That way the third of a suit falling on the river might not scare my opponents so much and may induce a bluff. Or perhaps is there something I can do on the river, when I do bet? Sometimes I’ll bet forcefully, going with the simple strong-means-strong reverse tell. But typically no matter what I do on the river, my opponents tend to remember that while I put in the last raise on the flop that I checked the river and I’m now betting when a scary card hits the board. It’s a tough sell to convince them I don’t have the flush (or straight), but there’s got to be some way. Thoughts?

Receive free spins when you sign up as Vegas Palms online casino new account holder. I don’t have any fake tells that can help, but it seems to me that if you are only going for the free card with a flush draw, you are giving much too much information away. I’ll sometimes go for a free card with a straight draw. This can be very effective if there’s a flush draw also. When the flush does not hit, but your straight does…..

Especially when you have an Ace over card as well as your draw. With a small number of opponents you might win the pot outright and you may have additional outs with any Diamond or any Ace. Similarly, with a large number of opponents you may be getting the right odds to bet the turn on your come hand when it is checked to you.

Two possibilities for mixing it up:
1. Raise the flop, check the turn, bet the river (even with the scare
card) with top pair once in a while. Show it off when you fold.
2. Bet the turn. If you can drive out other over cards, your ace-crap
has a better chance of winning with an ace on the river.

Realizing that Harrah’s does not have a hotel, is there any facility on Canal or close by that has a shuttle to the casino that runs regularly? Any hotel recommended by Harrah’s with a special rate?

Answer 1:

Harrah’s can get you a casino rate at the wyndham about 100 yds across the street. Ask for the poker room at Harrah’s for details.

Answer 2:

If you hold a Harrah’s Total Gold, Platinum or Diamond card you can probably get a room at a considerable discount or free if you call V.I.P. services. We stayed for free in late March and just received a coupon offering us another free 3-night stay.

Answer 3:

If you are not a Harrah’s VIP, I would say forget it. The hotels in the immediate area are very expensive, and the nearest reasonably-priced hotel is in a bad neighborhood. Valet parking can exceed $20–yes TWENTY dollars–self parking is not recommended. Of course, there are no such thing as food comps. I was there the other day and the games were as follows: $1-$5 stud, $3-$6 hold`em, $4-$8-$12 Omaha high (in which the pre-flop betting was routinely capped by players holding hands like 3-9-9-10).

Here’s an interesting hand from a game tonight. It’s a home game. 50 cent per player antes, no blind, 1-2-2-4 betting limits. 7 players. Omaha Hi. Somebody bet, I don’t remember who, 4 callers, the flop is something like Js Jc 8s. Player A checks, Player B bets, C raises (everybody else folds), A calls, B raises, C caps it, all call. Player A is a loose player, Player B more typical, neither very strong, neither are very experienced. C is a loose/aggressive/tough player. Been playing long time and he’s very good (he’s Pete). The turn is something like a 3d. A checks, B bets, C raises, A and B call. River is 10s. A bets, B raises, C turns over a J8, calls the two bets, and says to A “I’ve got a full house, I can beat your damn flush, don’t raise”. A shows a flush and folds. C wins with a J10. I wasn’t involved in this pot and may have gotten one or two of the betting details wrong, but I think I got them right. Comments?

Answer 1:

If anybody does raise Pete now, he knows they have the straight flush and he can fold and save a bet. Otherwise, I’m inclined to dismiss his antics as garden-variety Omaha-table showboating. I suppose another possibility is that he felt sorry for these two and was trying to spare them further agony on a hand at least one of them badly overplayed. I’d be interested in knowing what B had – 88? He did an awful lot of betting with a non-nut hand into a strong raiser.
Answer 2:

I misposted the hand. B won with the J10. The reason C showed his hand was to stop A from raising, just what he said. He knew, from the previous action that A had made a flush, and knew that A didn’t read boards real well and would likely get a little more excited than he should from his flush. I think I mistated the board also It was probably Js Jh 3s 8d 10s — I don’t think there was a possible straight flush, like I said, I wasn’t watching the hand that closely until Pete (player C) tabled the J8 and yelled at player A not to raise. Pete was fairly sure that the 10 had beated him, it was at least clear to him that B thought he had the best hand. But, the pot was large enough to make it worth calling just on the chance that B was getting excited with something like TT, making him Ten’s full. It was also clear to Pete (C) that A had a flush and C was worried about A raising and having to call two more bets. So, he tabled his hand to effect the action. He preferred to have Player A
fold than have Player A raise. It unsettled a couple of people at the table — having him call other’s hands so accurately – ala Rounder’s. No one suggested there was anything wrong with him having tabled his hand though.

Answer 3:

It is unethical and as far as I am concerned against the rules. How
would you feel if you had J-10 and he showed his J-8 which forces the flush (who might have called or raised) to fold. He has just cost you money. As a dealer I would ALWAYS say something if they expose cards with more than two players in. Heads up I usually tell them please don’t expose cards during the play.

I frequently play in AC and have noticed something that dealers often do at the Trop and the Sands. When there us a decent sized the pot, and players are taking time to decide what to do, the dealer will sometimes take a few whites or reds out of the rack, splash it into the pot, and take a red or green out. Has anyone ever seen this done? Should I speak up when I see it done? I usually only notice it when I’m not in the hand and just stay quiet…

Answer 1:

They’re just doing routine housekeeping, not taking an extra rake. Since the rack has limited space and has to be counted frequently, dealers try to limit the number of low-denomination chips in the rack. They also color up so that, for example, if they have a row of 19 reds, they can bring it up to an even 20 for easier counting. Also, if all of the chips in the pot are red or green, they may have to make change so that they can take out the drop. A good dealer will also make change to facilitate toking. The amount in the rack never changes. If you’ve ever been around a table when a dealer discovers the rack is short or over, you know how much angst this causes among the floor personnel, as well as the dealers, who may be held accountable for any loss. The rake never goes into the rack. It is always placed on top of the slot above the drop box. The jackpot rake, if there is one, goes on top of a separate slot. These are not dropped until the hand is over. This way you can see how much has been taken out. It’s not a bad idea to spot check once in a while. In particular, inexperienced dealers sometimes take too much out.

Answer 2:

There is absolutely nothing with what you see. Although Linda Sherman has written that the amount in the rack never changes and that the rake is not placed in the rack, she obviously is describing card room procedures and conditions other than in Atlantic City. In Atlantic City, the amount in the rack does change, and the rake is placed in the rack at the conclusion of each hand. No rake ever does down the slot. The slot is used *exclusively* for paper money that has been changed into chips. During the course of the hand, the dealer will remove chips (and/or half dollars in lower-limit games) from the pot and place them in a small circle in front of and to the right of the rack. this circle is directly in front of the slot. The amount of rake in Atlantic City is a maximum of 10% up to a maximum of $4 per hand. When the pot does not contain any white chips, the dealer will change down a red for five whites, so that the dealer can have white chips to rake. Experienced dealers also make sure that the pot contains one or two white chips for toking purposes. Frequently, in games below 15/30, dealers will change down green chips to reds. Green chips slow down a lower-limit game. At the Tropicana, you can clearly see the amount of the rake throughout the course of the hand. Dealers in that room are instructed to place the chips which have been raked side-by-side (not stacked) within the circle.

Answer 3:

In General this is bad form, and most likely incorrect procedure on the dealer’s part. The dealer should place the chip to be colored on the felt in front of the rack, remove the correct denomination of change from the rack and place it next to the chip(s) to be changed, THEN remove the other chip(s) and place them in a rack. This allows anyone who is watching, including the camera the time to verify the exchange. Example: A dealer counts down his rack during the down and realizes he is $2 short. He takes 4 $1 chips and splashes (tough to see how many chips DID actually hit the

I have less than 60 hours of playing time in 3-6 HE, and not much more in poker altogether. I have probably spent as much time studying the game, using “Winning Low Limit” by Lee Jones, “Hold-em Excellence” by Lou Kreiger, and “Hold-em Poker for Advanced Players” by Sklansky and Malmuth, along with other books. So far, despite losing in the few short handed games I’ve been in, I’m ahead. A situation occurred yesterday which I am still trying to figure out. Perhaps someone can enlighten me. Got into a great game, ranging from loose passive to a bit aggressive, with the most aggressive player two seats to my right, and a loose aggressive” in seat 2. [I am in seat 9 and I'm assuming that seat 1 starts at the left of the dealer. Things are going well, it is a "kill" game and a kill pot comes up.[bets double]. The button is on seat 2, I get pocket Aces. There are two bets to me and I raise. Seat two re-raises, seat three calls and seat 4 gets all in with final raise. So there are four of us including one all in. The flop comes QQJ. (I am deeply concerned} Seat three comes out betting, I make a hesitant call, seat 2 raises and seat 3 re-raises. Now I am in a complete quandary, I call time and try to remember any information from the references I’ve been studying. I am getting fuzzy and all I can pull up is Sklansky saying “If in doubt call”, so I call. I don’t remember what the turn was, but seat 2 and 3 are still in a raising war and I am caught in the middle, and upset because I think I should have folded because there isn’t a chance in hell that one of these guys doesn’t have a Queen. The river comes, seat 3 bets and I fold. They raise each other some more, then seat 2 turns over his AJ for one pair and seat 2 can’t even beat that. I chalked it up to inexperience and didn’t let it get to me too bad, but I am still wondering what the right play was.

Answer 1:

With only 60×2 hours spent on poker, you found yourself against a couple of either tough or maniac opponents who you call either “loose passive” or “a bit aggressive.” Until you get 500-1000 hours of experience under your belt I would recommend you concentrate on the basics, and ignore the reading of raises and the quick classifications of table conditions advocated in HPFAP, some of which as general advice is just plain wrong.

Answer 2:

It would be a better initial use of your time to read one book three times, and at every reading think about when (what situations) the given advise might be wrong and when it might be right. Eventually, read them all, but just reading one of them and thinking about it a lot takes you much further in the beginning. The first step is to evaluate the game, not the individual players. How
loose is the game (how many loose players)? How aggressive is the game (it only takes one loose aggressive player to make for an aggressive game
sometimes)?. In hold’em, you should often give it up on the flop. I’m not saying you should have here. But, in general, in holdem, if you’re in doubt on the flop then fold, if you’re in doubt on the river then call. In this situation, aggressive players who are raising a flop with QQx almost surely don’t have a queen. Aggressive players often suffer from FPS (fancy play syndrome) and tend to slow play too much. Not always, but that’s the tendency. Folding on the flop would not have been wrong. Folding on the river
is an awful mistake. You made exactly the mistake that Sklansky’s “when in doubt call” was intended to get you to avoid. This is why it’s better to read one book three times than read three books in the beginning. You need to understand what you’ve read — when it applies and when it doesn’t. By reading three books you just filled your head with stuff you only half understood — then in the heat of battle, you remembered the adage — but you remembered it on the flop, when it wasn’t meant to apply, and forgot it on the river when it was meant to apply. I would have been raising all the way. On the river I think they would have checked to me and I’d have bet.

Answer 3:

I would say you have two options:
1. With that flop, and a lot of betting and raising, you could fold. Don’t get married to your AA. You will be dealt it again, eventually. One of your opponents *might* have either JJ or AQ, or even possibly QJ. On the other hand, the raise of a loose aggressive player (maniac?) doesn’t necessarily mean anything at all, and you don’t want them bluffing you off a pot, which leads to option 2
2. Decide you still have the best hand, and keep going until/unless the evidence against you becomes overwhelming. Note that the bigger the pot, the smaller the chance that it would be correct to fold, even if you are behind, as long as you have decent outs. Sklansky has written that incorrectly folding on the river is a “disaster” because you lose an entire pot. Once you get to the river, you need to be very sure before you fold, especially in a low-limit game where people are always doing “irrational” things. However, folding on the flop is a common event — regardless of your pre-flop holding, the flop often misses you and you often should fold right there.

Many well respected names say that low-limit hold’em can be beat and that you should be able to beat the game regularly before moving-up to the mid-limit games. I have no problem with this. My question is how many hours did it take to go from a losing player to a breakeven player. Then the number of hours to go from a breakeven to a winning player.

Answer 1:

I’ve been winning ever since i started playing at the casino (abt. 6 mo. ago) in 3-6, 5-10 games at AC. I read a couple books before i started (Slansky, Brunson), kept patient as much as possible, and it works. I don’t really have the time that i would like to build my roll to play in the higher limit games, but I play more for the thrill of competition anyway. I recommend reading as much as you can about strategy, and being disciplined enough at the table to implement those strategies.

Answer 2:

Low limit hold ‘em is so different from high limit hold ‘em that I would argue that there is not much to be learned from a $2-4 or $4-8 game that translates to high limit and no limit. Play in a low limit game is so ridiculously loose and poor that i would be very cautious about using it as a classroom. If you are frustrated because you are losing to gut shot straights and other hands made at the river, you need to move up to a medium limit table where it is actually possible to get rid of these people by making them pay for cards.

Answer 3:

Yes you can win in low limit, but if you are good enough to win at low limit you will not stay there long. First the rake and the tips and overhead cost you about $10.00 per hour so that if you play 20 hours a week you have to win about $12,000.00 per year before you can break even. So many of us just play low limit to have fun but if you are playing for money it can be done but us old guys who play for fun don’t have enough time to wait round for the good hands so we play badly any two cards and we have fun so decide do I play for money or for fun.

Answer 1:

I think that A4 would be about a 3-1 favorite over A3.

Answer 2:

A4s vs A3s heads up (TTH simulation).
A4s wins 30.9% of the time.
A3s wins 25.3% of the time.
They split 44.8% of the time. So, it’s just 1.22 to 1 favourite.
Answer 3:

If the suited A3 is in a suit that is not the same as either the A or the 4, it’s practically dead even.

I’ve always said I’m more wary of unknown female players than male players when I sit down at a table. Can someone offer me an analysis of whether the female persuasion was over-represented at the latter stages of the WSOP final given their under-representation in the entire field? My gut instinct tells me that give their scarcity in the field, the women outplayed the men in this event.

Answer 1:

Your gut instinct is correct. Two women in the last twenty is a major increase in ratio of women: men than at the start of the event, but I can’t be bothered to find out the exact figures.

Answer 2:

Assuming you are correct and I am not sure you are – same could be said for Europeans. Women just don’t have the aggression necessary to be drawn to this game in big numbers. I also suspect it is the primary reason women (except for a couple of anomolies) are rarely seen at many final tables.

Answer 3:

I’m not dismissing the efforts of these two great players, but arguably one could also say that the current ratio of 0:6 is pronouncedly less than at the start of the event. Not picking on you or the women; this ties into the notion of wrapping up a perception in the exact moment things were most in your favor a la that one part of a hand where the 24o was ahead of 99 and thinking this is the totality of information. A perhaps better comparison would be to divide the prize money the women on by the # of women entrants x 10k. Using this barometer, I bet the women showed themselves quite well.
